The Coronavirus pandemic has caused many people across the globe to worry about their financial future. Everyday worries – how do we pay for the essentials in life such as food, clothes and rent?
And it’s not the first time the future has looked uncertain. Remember the financial crash of 2008? The dot-com crash of the early 2000s? Black Monday of 1987? Maybe even the OPEC oil crisis of 1973? Most likely before you were born, there was the great depression of the late 1920s!
As far back as history records, people’s fortunes have come and gone, and we all have our own financial challenges.
Jesus told his followers to focus on a different type of wealth.
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven…”
Matthew 6 v 19
This wealth isn’t anything to do with money or possessions, but trusting in God to give us stability.
Followers of Jesus are told
“not …to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy.”
1 Timothy 6 v 16
But what about our future?
God promises that Jesus will come back to the earth to establish God’s kingdom – a time to come when financial instability will be a thing of the past.
Best of all, God offers us this future hope for free!
“Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.”
Isaiah 55 v 1
This hope doesn’t make our real life problems go away – we still need to grapple with current uncertainties. But it gives us comfort to know that if we put our trust in God, our long term future is certain and bright!
