What is the worst thing about getting older?

Some people just hate the idea of having a bigger number describing their age. Others are worried about becoming less able to do things that they enjoy.

A Google search revealed an amazing amount of articles giving advice on wrinkles. It was fascinating… which made me wonder how many people are willing to do something drastic and expensive to try and get rid of these signs of ageing.

In 2018 in the UK, 28,000 cosmetic surgery procedures took place. The anti-ageing market in the cosmetics industry worldwide was worth 53 billion US dollars in 2019, and is expected to rise to $56 billion in 2020.

Ageing is seen as a problem that needs to be fixed, and so far we have only considered appearance. Health problems are obviously very significant too.

What does the Bible say about ageing?

Jesus taught that we shouldn’t worry about it –

“…Who of you by being worried can add a single hour to his life?” .

Matthew 6 v 27

In fact, stress and worry have been shown to cause health problems which could possibly reduce our lifespan. The lesson Jesus was teaching was that God cares for us every day, providing for our needs. He suggested that it is better to focus on positive things, rather than worrying about the future.

“So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself…”

Matthew 6 v 34

When God sends Jesus back to reign on earth, it won’t matter how old people are. The prophet Isaiah put it like this:

“Yet those who wait for the LORD will gain new strength; They will mount up with wings like eagles, they will run and not get tired, they will walk and not become weary”

Isaiah 40 v 31

Instead of worrying about wrinkles, why not take the advice of Jesus?

“But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

Matthew 6 v 33
