Recently the president of the USA pledged to move their Israeli embassy from Tel Aviv to the city of Jerusalem, in recognition of it as the capital of Israel.
But the Bible goes one step further than Donald Trump by telling us that Jerusalem will have a more significant role than just the capital of Israel.
We read in Isaiah 2v2-3:
It shall come to pass in the latter days that the mountain of the house of the LORD shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be lifted up above the hills; and all the nations shall flow to it, and many peoples shall come, and say: “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob, that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths. For out of Zion shall go the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
The United Nations have rejected the notion that Jerusalem should be the capital of Israel – never mind the greater role that we read of above. Ironically, the Isaiah wall on the UN building in New York features part of the next verse, v4:
..and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore. (KJV)
This goal of peace is something that the United Nations hopes to achieve – but how can they when world leaders have their national interests at heart and can’t even agree on the capital of Israel?
Jesus will rule the world from Jerusalem
The part of the verse missed out on the UN wall says, “He shall judge between the nations, and shall decide disputes for many peoples…” (ESV)
The prospect of divine authority is not what the world wants but again the Bible tells us in Isaiah 11v3-4:
…And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide disputes by what his ears hear, but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth..
The Bible tells us that the kingdom which Jesus will initiate is not a temporary one, but an everlasting one. Isaiah 9v7:
Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore.
With man in charge the prospect of world peace is impossible but the New Testament tells us that world peace will happen with an incorruptible world leader, the Lord Jesus Christ {Matthew 25v31-34}.
